By now, all of you should be quite familiar with 小树 (the Treehouse) and their resident cat 小宝 (Xiao Bao). As I have never felt quite so strangely at home as I do in Beijing, I have never felt so much a part of a community as I have at the Treehouse. Since my first visit roughly 16 months ago I have gone from a customer to a friend to a "boss" at the Treehouse. On a dozen or so occasions this winter and fall I've run the Treehouse myself, using my key, playing my music, serving drinks and chatting with customers new and old. It's late in the evening (and my last here), and I haven't much time, but even if that weren't the case I would have a difficult time putting into words how much it has meant to be so welcomed into this family (there are a total of 8 "bosses" at the Treehouse, and numerous other friends that frequent the place) and how much it has meant to me to care so much and be so much cared for here. I might not be able to explain it sufficiently, but I'll try to show you all the same...

In late November I used a gorgeous picture Wu Jie took of Xiao Bao and had it made into buttons which were delivered to the Treehouse when I was traveling in the South.

Shang Xuan sent me the pictures of the many "bosses" of the Treehouse proudly sporting the buttons.

Last night I had my going-away party at the Treehouse, inviting friends foreign and local to eat dumplings, play music, drink beer, and do kung-fu in the panda suit. It was a wonderful night. My suitcases are packed to bursting with presents received and for giving and almost all of my goodbyes have been said. I'm back at the treehouse on my last night in town, cat on my lap, tea in my mug, feeling a little sad and a lot grateful, ready for hellos.
